What Are Shampoo Soap Bars and How to Use Them?
Our shampoo soap bars are hair cleansing products based on soap. They do not contain synthetic surfactants such as SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) or SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate).
Since the bar is soap-based, it behaves slightly differently from shampoos that contain these surfactants. Soap is a mild cleansing agent, so it is gentle on the scalp, and many of our customers have found relief from scalp issues such as dandruff and itching. Soap-based shampoo bars make hair very voluminous, and most users find they don't need styling products at all, as their hair becomes easier to style. However, some users may experience stickiness in their hair when they first start using the bar. This stickiness is due to the transition to a soap-based product but usually disappears after a few washes. So, it is definitely worth persevering if the bar doesn't feel good initially. Shampoo soap bars are among our best-selling products and have thousands of satisfied users!
How to Use a Shampoo Soap Bar
- Thoroughly wet your hair with warm water (lather forms better in warm water), and lightly wet the bar.
- Rub the bar on your hair until there is plenty of lather all over.
- Lather thoroughly, especially at the nape, if you have long hair. If lathering doesn't start, add a little warm water to your hair during lathering.
- You can also do a quick interim rinse and lather again if necessary.
- Once there is plenty of lather in your hair, massage your scalp with your fingers to clean it.
- Then rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water. Towel dry and add a conditioner if needed.
Storing Your Shampoo Soap Bar
Store the shampoo soap bar like a bar of soap, on a surface where water can drain away. Airy soap dishes, wall-mounted baskets, mesh bags, etc., are suitable for this purpose.

What to Do If a Shampoo Soap Bar Leaves Your Hair Sticky
When starting to use a shampoo soap bar, depending on hair type, treatments, etc., stickiness can occur quite a bit. For some customers, the product works well immediately, while for others, the transition can take many washes. Treated hair is more porous and can easily retain residues. Soap-based shampoo bars may leave soap residues on these porous parts of the hair, making them feel sticky. Here are some tips to tackle stickiness:
- Lather your hair very thoroughly, including the spaces between hair, the nape, and especially the ends. It helps to do a light lather first, then a quick interim rinse, and then lather again.
- Rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water.
- Lightly towel dry.
- Rinse your hair with Flow Cosmetics hair rinse or alternatively with a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water (about 2dl water and 20-30ml vinegar), which helps with stickiness quickly. Be thorough in applying the rinse so that it gets between the hairs properly.
- You can make the rinse stronger than the instructions suggest, which helps with stickiness faster, or you can extend the rinse with regular apple cider vinegar to make it more economical.
- You can try rinsing with baking soda before washing: 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 250ml of water. Then wash normally.
- You can try a deep clean with green clay for your hair. Apply the clay paste to clean, damp hair and leave it on for half an hour. Then wash your hair lightly with the bar and apply a vinegar rinse afterward.
- You can try lathering with a sponge to quickly get a larger amount of lather into your hair.
Do You Need Conditioner with a Shampoo Soap Bar?
For long hair, we always recommend using a conditioner because the ends of long hair are more worn and need protection. Natural conditioners like Flow Cosmetics Wild Nettle Hair Rinse is suitable for this purpose.
How to Use Conditioner Properly
- Wash your hair and towel dry it thoroughly. This step is crucial to remove excess water from the hair, allowing it to better absorb the treatment. Additionally, you will use significantly less conditioner if you master this light towel drying technique.
- Then, dispense a small amount of conditioner, depending on the length of your hair. For short hair, a teaspoon or less is sufficient, and for long hair, a tablespoon. Add more conditioner if needed, as these amounts are approximate.
- Apply the conditioner primarily to the ends of your hair. If you have an oily scalp, avoid applying the conditioner to the roots. If your scalp is dry, you can apply the conditioner to your entire hair, including the scalp, as the conditioner will moisturize a dry scalp.
How Does a Hair Rinse Work?
Our hair rinses are apple cider vinegar-based hair care products that are concentrates to be diluted with water before use. With a hair rinse, there is no need to use a conditioner, as they work as a conditioning and detangling product on their own. The rinse also effectively removes stickiness if your hair tends to become sticky from using the bar. The rinse makes hair very shiny and easy to detangle. To use, mix the rinse in a plastic cup, pouring a small amount of concentrate as per the instructions, and adding water. Then pour the mixture slowly over freshly washed, towel-dried hair. You can either leave the product in your hair or rinse lightly. However, avoid a long rinse to allow some product to remain in the hair. The hair rinse also treats the scalp, so be sure to apply it all the way to the roots. Check out our Wild Nettle Hair Rinse.
What Our Customers Say About Shampoo Bars
Customer Reviews Highlights:
“Best ever! I have a sensitive scalp and fine hair, and this is the best shampoo I've ever used. My scalp is healthy, and it feels like I lose less hair. I used to use salon products, but this is better. My hair is much fuller, and I don’t need any styling products. My husband doesn’t want to use anything else either!”
“Excellent product! I’ve been using it for a couple of months. I just went to the hairdresser, and she praised the good condition of my hair. I have long, thick, naturally curly hair. The hairdresser said my hair isn’t dry, which is unusual for curly hair. It’s easy to use and lathers well. Sometimes I use calendula extract as a treatment.”
“A great and natural way to wash hair. This product is excellent! The first shampoo that allows me to wash my long hair without needing a separate conditioner. Patience is required to get used to the new washing method and shampoo. Initially, hair does feel sticky, but as promised, this effect disappears over time. Natural ingredients are what I’m looking for. I definitely won’t go back to bottled shampoo! Oh, and this also eliminates the unnecessary weight and cost of transporting 'water' in shampoos. Why transport water when you just want shampoo?”
